Have you ever felt guilty for not worrying? Have you ever felt strangely incomplete when you accepted the fact that God is in control (not you), and decided to trust him in a situation? Is your life entangled with continuous drama because of your fretting? Are you perhaps addicted?
Most of us do not face life-threatening situations in our life-times, but I have experienced a few. I once had a young client who had been terribly traumatized by her family. She came to me for help. She was just beginning to experience some healing when I started to receive threatening phone calls from people associated with the mafia. I was terrified, fretting for days about our safety yet unwilling to abandon my client. I created in my mind all kinds of strategies to work around the situation.
One morning during my quiet time the Lord brought me to Isaiah 37: 1-3:
Do not fret because of evil men
Or be envious of those who do wrong;
For like the grass they will soon wither,
like the green plants they will soon die away.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Of course, I wanted the evil men to wither right away!
Usually I fret over simpler things like avoiding the flu or cleaning the house. Yet, even those things can steal my joy and the Lord quietly reminds me…Do not fret.
Thank you, Lord, for your peace and joy in those times when we might want to say something foolish like, “Just let me fret.”
Blessings,
Annette
